With two weeks of the 2025 CrossFit Open already behind us, it’s time to look ahead and speculate about what might be coming our way in 25.3. So far, the first two workouts have tested a wide range of skills, from endurance and gymnastics to strength and stamina. But with one more Open workout to go, what can we expect in week three? Let’s dive into some predictions!
What We’ve Seen So Far
Week 1 (25.1) gave us a grueling chipper that tested our capacity for high-volume movements, while week 2 (25.2) pushed our gymnastics and barbell skills to the limit with a combination of pull-ups, thrusters, and double-unders. So what’s left? Historically, the third and final Open workout tends to ramp up the intensity even further, often incorporating heavier weights, high-skill movements, or a combination of both.
What Movements Are Left?
Looking at past Opens, Castro and the programming team often aim to ensure that a wide range of movements are covered throughout the three weeks. Given what we’ve seen so far, here are some movements we haven’t tackled yet that could make an appearance in 25.3:
- Deadlifts: A staple of the Open that hasn’t shown up yet this year.
- Handstand Push-Ups/Walks: Advanced gymnastics that haven’t been tested yet.
- Ring Muscle-Ups: We’ve had bar muscle-ups, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see rings come into play.
- Dumbbell Movements: We’ve yet to see any dumbbells this year, and they often feature at least once.
- Box Jumps/Box Jump Overs: A classic Open movement that hasn’t been used yet.
Potential Workout Structure
It wouldn’t be surprising to see a chipper or a longer AMRAP to close out the Open. There’s also a chance we could see a repeat of a classic workout or an Open favorite with a twist. Here are a few potential combinations that could come up:
Option 1: Heavy Barbell and Gymnastics Combo
For Time:
- 21 Deadlifts (225/155 lbs)
- 21 Handstand Push-Ups
- 15 Box Jump Overs
- 15 Ring Muscle-Ups
- 9 Clean and Jerks (185/125 lbs)
Option 2: Dumbbell and Gymnastics Chipper
For Time:
- 50 Dumbbell Snatches (50/35 lbs)
- 40 Toes-to-Bar
- 30 Dumbbell Box Step-Overs (24/20 in)
- 20 Ring Muscle-Ups
- 10 Dumbbell Thrusters
What to Watch Out For
If history is any guide, the final workout of the Open often brings a high level of intensity and tests athletes’ ability to maintain speed while managing fatigue. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Be Prepared for Heavy Weights: Don’t be shocked if the final workout demands more strength than the previous ones. Make sure your form is dialed in to move efficiently.
- High-Skill Gymnastics: If ring muscle-ups or handstand push-ups appear, focus on staying smooth and consistent. Don’t blow out early!
- Pacing is Key: With the potential for a longer workout, pacing will be essential to avoid burnout. Plan your breaks and transitions smartly.
Final Thoughts
Whatever 25.3 throws at us, one thing is for sure: it will be a true test of grit and fitness. Whether it’s a heavy lift, a long chipper, or a gymnastics-heavy burner, being well-rounded and prepared for anything will be the key to success.
