The 2025 CrossFit Games season gets underway in just over a week and is already shaping up to be one of the most transformative yet. After completing its investigation into the tragic death of Lazar Ðukić during the 2024 CrossFit Games, CrossFit HQ has announced a series of changes that will redefine how athletes qualify and compete in the upcoming season.
Here’s a breakdown of the biggest changes for the 2025 season, starting with the crucial dates for the Open, and then diving into the significant shifts in qualification stages.
Key Dates for the 2025 CrossFit Games Season
- Open Registration Begins: January 15
- 2025 CrossFit Open: February 27 – March 17
- Open Workout 25.1: Feb. 27 (12 p.m. PT) – Mar. 3 (5 p.m. PT)
- Open Workout 25.2: Mar. 6 (12 p.m. PT) – Mar. 10 (5 p.m. PT)

Major Changes for the 2025 CrossFit Games Season
1. No More Quarterfinals
The biggest shake-up for the 2025 season is the removal of the Quarterfinals stage. In the past, athletes would advance from the Open to Quarterfinals, and then onto Semifinals. Now, the top finishers in the Open will skip the Quarterfinals and head directly to the Semifinals, simplifying the process.
2. Virtual In-Affiliate Semifinals
In an effort to make qualification more accessible and flexible, CrossFit is introducing a new “virtual in-affiliate Semifinal” for all divisions. These will take place during the first weekend of May, with Age Group and Team athletes competing in April.
In-Affiliate Semifinal Dates:
- Age-Group: April 3-6
- Team: April 24-27
- Individual: May 1-4
- Adaptive: May 8-11
This move shifts the qualification process towards a more localized experience, as athletes can now compete at their own affiliates rather than traveling to larger events.
3. In-Person Qualifying Events for Individuals
While the Semifinal process will still involve a virtual component, CrossFit will also recognize multiple premier events around the world as official qualifying events for Individual athletes. These in-person events will run from April to June, giving athletes a broader opportunity to qualify for the Games.
Individual athletes may compete in a combination of in-person qualifiers and virtual in-affiliate Semifinals, with 30 men and 30 women ultimately earning a spot at the CrossFit Games.
4. Reduced Athlete Field for the CrossFit Games
One of the most significant changes is the reduction in the number of athletes competing at the Games.
- The Individual field will decrease from 40 men and 40 women to 30 each, a 25% reduction.
- The Team field will also be reduced by 33%, from 30 teams to just 20.
Additionally, CrossFit has implemented a new rule stating that each affiliate can only qualify one team for the final Games.
5. The Community Cup
In a bid to further engage the global CrossFit community, CrossFit will introduce the Community Cup in 2025. After completing the Open, athletes will be ranked based on their performance and can then participate in a local competition hosted at their affiliate. This will give athletes a chance to extend their competitive season while connecting with their local fitness community.
6. New “Pairs” Competition
CrossFit is also unveiling a new competition format called Pairs, which will be hosted by the Masters Fitness Championship in October 2025. Individual and Master athletes will be able to partner with anyone in the world and use their Open scores to qualify for the event. The top-ranked pairs will then compete in person at the Masters Fitness Championship.
What Stays the Same?
Despite the many changes, there are some constants in the 2025 season:
- The CrossFit Open will still be the first stage of the season and will remain three weeks long.
- The Adaptive Division will continue to compete in the WheelWOD Open alongside the CrossFit Open.
- The CrossFit Games will continue to be held in August, with the conclusion of the Individual and Team Divisions. The exact dates for the Teenage, Masters, and Adaptive divisions will be confirmed at a later date.
Wrapping Up
The 2025 CrossFit Games season will be radically different from previous years, with a streamlined qualification process, new competition formats, and fewer athletes at the Games. These changes have the potential to make the journey to the Games more flexible and accessible while also creating new opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest level.
While the reduction in the number of qualifying spots will increase the intensity of competition, CrossFit’s decision to remove Quarterfinals and introduce virtual Semifinals aims to make the qualification process more approachable for athletes worldwide.
For some, the new changes will offer a more manageable pathway to the Games, while for others, the drastic cuts could make the competition even tougher. As we move closer to the 2025 season, it’ll be interesting to see how athletes and affiliates adapt to the changes, and how the CrossFit community embraces the evolving structure of the sport.
