The Science of CrossFit: Analysis of a Workout Part 2

Last week we posted a video on The Rx Review showing some of the world’s best CrossFitter’s being scientifically tested by researchers at Pepperdine University.

The footage was shot by CrossFit HQ during Team USA’s lead up to the CrossFit Invitational earlier this year.

Both Jason Khalipa and Rebecca Voigt were tested during a rowing ‘Helen’ workout. They were hooked up with a number of gadgets to track various markers, and had to wear a mask over their mouth and nose during the workout.

This week, HQ has released another video of Team USA’s visit to the University.

The above video shows 2012 CrossFit Games Runner-Up Julie Foucher take part in some testing.

The medical student was hooked up with a mask and some other gadgets while completing the workout ‘Fran’ in front of a room full of students.

After the workout, Dr. Holden MacRae from the University revealed that Foucher’s heart rate was at 190 bpm for much of the workout, and that her V02 Max was a lot higher than the average person’s would have been during the workout.

“Clearly she’s got a capacity well beyond what we would expect,” he says.

But as informative as it was for the students and researchers at the university, it was also a chance for Foucher, the budding medical student, to do some of her own research, and pick the brains of the lecturers on hand.

“I really love their approach to research here and how much they really want their research to affect people and to not have research published in a paper that’s filed away somewhere and no one reads it,” she says.

“I think that’s really important in translating that research to medical care and to general practice so it really helps people and improves people’s lives.”
