The 2012 CrossFit Games will be replayed on ESPN across parts of the world next week, but here’s some footage you won’t be seeing on the broadcast.
North America, Australia and New Zealand will have the Games televised over numerous days in the month of September. But here is some behind the scenes footage shot by CrossFt HQ during the event.
The first day (a surprise day) was at Camp Pendeleton, where athletes took part in a grueling triathlon, and a tough obstacle course at the military base.
The footage gives us a closer look at some of the more memorable moments of the Games:
- Deborah Corder-Carson’s brave effort to overcome her fear of swimming and complete the 700 meter swim leg (she later went on to win the Spirit of the Games award because of it).
- Ben Smith’s bike being accidentally pinched after the swim leg, leaving him without a ride for the second leg.
- Six times Games competitor Chris Spealler almost passing out with exhaustion.
- Iceland athlete Numi Katrinarson quitting, and then re-joining the Games after the triathlon.
Filmed by CrossFit’s Sevan Matossian, who is also the brains behind the documentary, Every Minute Counts, the footage has some great one of one interviews with Games Director Dave Castro, Games Champion Rich Froning, Australia’s Chad Mackay, Kristan Clever, Spencer Hendel and Annie Sakamoto.
If anything, it’s a great way to get ready to watch the 2012 CrossFit Games again!
