2013 CrossFit Games Preview: North East Region

With the 2013 CrossFit Open just weeks away, we thought we’d take some time to preview every region taking part this year.

Today we take a closer look at the North East Region.

The North East has been producing top CrossFitters for a number of years now with names like Rob Orlando, Austin Malleolo and Jenny Davis all hailing from the Region.

But as well as producing top individuals, the Region also boasts remarkable CrossFit teams, none better than CrossFit New England who won the Affiliate Cup in 2011.

With the 2013 CrossFit Games just months away, here is a look at some of the individuals and teams to look out for this year:

Men

After winning the past two Regional titles, Austin Malleolo will be the individual to beat in the men’s division.

The CrossFit veteran has been one of the most consistent performers over the past few years, finishing 8th at the 2012 CrossFit Games, and is sure to be up there again in 2013.

Runner up at the past two Regional Games, Daniel Tyminski will also be one to watch out for, as too is Spencer Hendel, who finished 3rd at the 2012 Regionals.

Other names to keep an eye on include David Charbonneau (4th at 202 Regionals) and Daniel Romano (5th at 2012 Regionals).

Women

The females division is well open in the North East Region with a number of top athletes able to claim the 2013 title.

Last year just 10 points separated 1st place and 3rd place at the North East Regionals, while in 2011, that margin was just five points.

After her 8th place finish at the 2012 CrossFit Games, reigning Regional champion Jenny Davis will go into this year as the woman to beat.

Alicia Gomes, runner up at the 2012 Regionals and Jesse Lemoine (3rd at 2012 Regionals) will also be contenders for this year’s Regional title.

Other names to keep an eye on are 2011 Regional champion Kelly Steadman, Stacey Kroon (7th at the 2012 Regionals) and Bethany Hart (5th at 2012 Regionals).

Team

2011 Affiliate Cup Champions, and reigning Regional champions, CrossFit New England will be one of the favourites to take out this year’s title.

But they will face tough competition from CrossFit Southie (2nd at 2012 Regionals) and Champlain Valley CrossFit (3rd at 2012 Regionals).

Other teams that are in the mix to qualify for the 2013 CrossFit Games include CrossFit Milford (4th at 2012 Regionals) and BKAthletics (5th at 2012 Regionals).
